What an outfit actually costs.
Everyone has a number in their head for what "put together" costs, and almost nobody has checked it. Our catalog holds 27,520 live-priced pieces from the racks we actually build looks from — Bloomingdale's to JNBY — so we ran the numbers on the four outfits that carry most working wardrobes. The short version: looking expensive starts near $293, and the gap between that and the ceiling doesn't live where you think it does.
The four outfits, three ways
Per category: the smart buy is the 10th percentile of every live price, the investment is the 90th. Summed per look.

Where the money actually hides

The spread isn't even across a wardrobe — it's concentrated in what you carry, not what you wear. Dresses are the most democratic garment in fashion: the whole market lives inside a ×3 band, so it's hard to overpay and hard to look underdressed. Bags are the opposite. A ×81 spread (totes: ×60) means the bag is where a look silently turns into a mortgage payment — and where the smart-buy column does its loudest work.
Both ends of that office row have a page of their own: the tote that goes desk to dinner and the heel that reads finished under a trouser — each one priced against a look-alike that costs a fraction.
The practical read: spend down on the flat-spread pieces (the dress, the blazer) and let one deliberate investment carry the look — ideally the one in your hand, because that's where the eye checks the price.
How we did this (and what it can't tell you)
Every number on this page is computed from the 27,520 priced, categorized items in the FashionMix catalog at build time — the same feed our FIND tool searches — spanning Bloomingdale's, JNBY, Cerqular and partner retailers. Categories are assigned by garment noun; non-apparel is excluded. The catalog skews toward elevated retailers by design: these numbers describe dressing well, not dressing cheapest. Prices move, so the page recomputes with every catalog refresh rather than quoting a dead snapshot.
What it can't see is the same item priced twice. That's the other half of the question — 28 staples read across 73 store pages in a day, where the average gap came to 34%.

A complete office look — blazer, trousers, heels, and a tote — starts around $504 buying at the smart end of the market, with a median near $1,509 across the elevated retailers in our data.
What part of an outfit is worth investing in?
The piece with the widest price spread is the bag: 81× between a smart buy and the top of the market in our data. It's the most visible signal in a look and the hardest to fake. Dresses sit at the other extreme (3×), so a premium dress buys the least visible difference.
Can you look expensive for under $500?
Yes. Every one of the four core occasion outfits — office, weekend, dinner, travel — prices under $504 at the 10th percentile of a catalog anchored by Bloomingdale's. The cheapest complete look, dinner & date, starts at $293.
How much does a dress actually cost?
Across the 2,306 dresses in our live catalog, a smart buy sits around $105, the median is $210, and the top of the market runs past $349 — a 3× spread. Any "average dress price" you read is really a choice about where on that ladder you shop; the occasion doesn't change, the number does.
