The one jacket that rewrites everything under it.
Nothing else in a wardrobe changes the meaning of a whole outfit as fast as a black blazer. Drop it over a t-shirt and jeans and the jeans start reading as a decision. Drop it over a slip dress and the dress stops being an evening and becomes a plan. It is the most-worn thing in most well-built wardrobes, and — because it usually gets bought in a hurry, the week before something matters — it is also the piece most people own a bad version of.
Black is the cheapest thing in fashion, so you are not paying for the colour. You are paying for everything the colour conceals. Black flattens print, weave and seam lines until the only thing anyone can actually read is how the jacket hangs: where the shoulder sits, how far the lapel rolls before it breaks, whether the front edge falls straight or starts curling away from the body by lunchtime. That is structure, and it comes out of cloth with enough weight to remember a shape, a lining slippery enough to let the jacket move independently of your arms, and shaping that was built in rather than pressed on. Buy it one step roomier than instinct and wear it open. A black blazer that fits like a suit jacket drags the whole suit in behind it, and a suit is rarely what the day called for. Sleeve to the wrist bone, never past it. And the quickest way to stop the thing reading like a uniform is to break the tailoring deliberately — a soft linen shirt, a trouser you didn't press, a flat shoe — so the jacket ends up the only sharp object in the outfit, which is exactly the job you bought it for.

Tailoring survives July if you shorten what goes under it. City summer, suited puts this jacket over bare legs without letting it look like a compromise.
It is also the fastest way to be taken seriously in a room you have never been in. What a hiring room reads before you speak works out the rest of the outfit around it.
A structured shoulder wants a finished toe under it, not a blunt one. The heel that ends the leg cleanly is the shoe that makes tailoring look intentional.
