Every other layer you own has an exit strategy. The coat comes off at the door, the blazer comes off at dinner, and both of them leave you standing there in whatever you happened to put on underneath. A cardigan never asks that question. It's the only piece of outerwear that is also a top, which is why it survives an office that runs cold, a restaurant that runs colder, and the walk between the two — and why the good ones get worn to death while the good coats hang there looking expensive.
Toteme's is knitted from a compact jersey with a little stretch in it, and "compact" is the word doing the work: a dense, fine gauge that stays where you put it instead of growing elbows by March. Crew neck, front buttons, nothing else. Which means it's a cardigan open, a sweater closed, and a very quiet top with the bottom two buttons undone — three garments before you have styled anything.
Buttoned to the throat over nothing but a silk camisole is the version that reads deliberate. Open over a wide crepe trouser is the version that actually gets worn on a Tuesday. The one rule worth keeping is that a cardigan should either skim the body or swallow it; the in-between fit — the one that just sort of hangs around the hip — is what makes a knit look tired long before it is.
