The garment you buy by the gram.

When a couture house sells a plain black legging for the price of a flight to Paris, it is conceding something the rest of fashion admitted years ago: the black knit tube has become a trouser category. Lanvin's version is heavy viscose jersey, cut long and clean, and worn under a long coat or an oversized knit it passes every test a tailored trouser passes — which is precisely the promotion the legging has been working toward since it left the gym.

Judging one is unlike judging anything else on this site, because there is no cut to hide behind. No lapel, no pleat, no wash. A legging is a tube of stretched knit, and every job it performs is performed by the fabric itself: weight decides whether it stays opaque when the knee bends, recovery decides whether it still fits at four o'clock the way it fit at nine, and the surface — matte, dense, lightless — is the entire difference between reading as clothing and reading as underwear. All of that is measured in grams per square metre, and none of it is visible in a product photo. Which is why the rare listing that states its fabric in the product name is telling you more than most descriptions manage in a paragraph.

That is exactly what the pair on this page turns on. The swap names its knit — Airweight — right in the title, the way a serious tool lists its spec, and on the two jobs a legging is actually hired for, opacity and recovery, a purpose-built performance knit concedes nothing to the couture version. What the bigger number buys is real but different: the poured drape of heavy viscose that moves like suiting rather than sport, and the label. Say it that way and both purchases are defensible. Pretend otherwise and neither is.

Where it goes

What goes on top decides whether the day reads athletic or dressed. The under-layer with three decisions in it is the other half of the uniform.

On a long day in transit, nothing else earns the seat. The carry-on is packed around exactly this kind of comfort.

The day the legging loses is the day denim wins. The wide-leg pair worth owning is the argument from the other side of the drawer.
