The dress that walks on cloth alone.
A floor-length dress with no slit is the most complete sentence in a wardrobe: one garment, and the outfit is over. Mint Velvet's pleated satin version does what the best maxis do, which is look chosen rather than laboured-over — the hem rides just off the ankle, the satin catches light in vertical lines, and there is nothing to add except shoes and the will to leave the house. What it refuses to do is show you how it moves in a photograph, because a maxi's whole character lives in the part the camera never captures: the step.
Here is the problem every maxi has to solve. A straight column of cloth that reaches the floor will stop your stride like a rope at the knee — so any long dress you can actually walk in has extra circumference smuggled into it somewhere, and the product name usually tells you where. Pleats are the tailored answer: pressed shut from the waist, they read as a slim line at a standstill and open into width mid-step, then close again before anyone can say how it happened. Tiers are the cotton answer — rings of gathered cloth stacked toward the hem, each one adding sweep. Godets, gores, a bias cut: different tools, same job. The slit solves walking by subtraction; this dress solves it by addition, and keeps the leg out of the conversation entirely.
