A slip dress has nowhere to hide. No sleeve, no seaming, no collar doing quiet structural work in the background — just a panel of satin and whatever it decides to do on the way down. When the fabric is right it falls in a column and skims the parts you'd rather it skimmed. When it's wrong it grips, and there is no in-between and no fixing it with a belt.
Which is why the fibre content matters more here than on anything else you own. Stella McCartney's is cut from an acetate-and-viscose satin — the old-school blend that hangs heavy and moves in one piece — and that weight is most of what the price tag is buying. The pattern itself is two straps and a body, same as every slip ever made; the difference is entirely in how the cloth behaves once it's on.
Wear it the way it actually gets worn rather than the way it's photographed: a knit pushed off the shoulders when the restaurant is over-air-conditioned, a flat shoe when you don't want the whole evening to announce itself. It's the closest thing in a wardrobe to a blank page — the styling is what you write on it.
