Nobody sees what you're wearing for four months of the year. They see the coat, and then they see you again in April. Which is why this is the one garment where paying up is straightforwardly rational, and also why picking the wrong one costs you a whole winter.

Two things separate a good wool coat from a sad one, and neither is the label. The first is weight: under about 500 grams of cloth a coat drapes like a dressing gown and creases across the back by lunchtime, where a proper melton or double-face holds its line from shoulder to hem with no help from you. The second is where the shoulder seam lands. Past the edge of your actual shoulder and the coat reads borrowed, which is charming at fifteen and expensive-looking on nobody.

Twelve hundred dollars buys the Danish version with the shoulder cut properly and enough cloth to hang. Below is the same length and the same line, with the fibre content quietly downgraded.
