Guide · Holiday party
Holiday party outfits for 2026.
Dress to the invitation, then add one thing that catches the light: velvet, satin or metal, on a single piece. A velvet blazer over a satin skirt handles the office party; a metallic slip dress handles anything that says cocktail. Below are four complete outfits, every piece in stock at the price shown.
December is the one month the room expects you to try. The trick is trying in the right place: one fabric that does the celebrating, and everything else quiet enough that it looks like you always dress this way.
Read the invitation before the closet
| It says | It means |
|---|---|
| Casual / come as you are | Dark denim is allowed. Bring the shine through a top or an earring. |
| Festive | Cocktail lengths, plus permission for velvet, sequins and colour. |
| Cocktail | Knee to midi dress, or tailored trousers and a dressy top. Real shoes. |
| Black tie optional | Floor length is welcome, a polished midi is fine. Men: dark suit or dinner jacket. |
| Nothing at all (the office) | Your best meeting outfit, one notch shinier. Covered shoulders if it's daytime. |
The office party.
Festive, still employed
Velvet is the office party's best friend because it's festive without being loud: in the conference room at four it reads as a good jacket, at the bar at eight it reads as an outfit. Under it, black cashmere and a charcoal satin skirt that moves when you walk. The shoe is the expensive-looking part. Brown suede against all that black is what makes the rest look considered rather than safe, and a low heel means you're still standing when the speeches run long.
-
Elle velvet blazer $140 -
M&S Autograph pure cashmere knit top $199
-
M&S Autograph satin midi slip skirt, charcoal $129
-
Vince Venice suede slingback $350
The outfit: $818
Same look for $547
Swap the Vince Venice suede slingback for the M&S mesh kitten-heel slingback, brown at $78.99. Same low heel, same brown against the black. From across the room the mesh reads as texture.
The cocktail party.
Somebody's apartment, after nine
A pewter slip dress is the whole outfit; everything else is there to stay out of its way. A nude strappy sandal makes the leg longer than a black one would. Then the deliberate clash: a gold popcorn clutch and crystal-and-pearl drops against silver satin. Mixed metals look intended when there are exactly two of them. For a second reference, Sequins, no occasion. runs the same play with a liquid-silver mini.
-
Mint Velvet metallic satin midi slip dress $380 -
Cinq à Sept Dana strappy sandal $227.50 -
Aqua popcorn clutch, gold $168 -
Swarovski Matrix crystal and pearl drops $219
The outfit: $995
Same look for $703
Swap the Mint Velvet metallic satin midi slip dress for the M&S metallic cowl-neck slip dress, silver at $88.99. Knee length instead of midi, gunmetal instead of pewter. Under low light, nobody is measuring the hem.
Dinner at a friend's.
Eight people, one long table
The house party punishes anyone who overdresses for a sofa. Wide black trousers with a satin waistband do the dressing up from the waist down, so the top can be a sage cashmere crewneck you'd wear on a Sunday. Velvet penny loafers because you'll be on your feet in a kitchen for an hour, and silver teardrops because the sweater's neckline leaves exactly that much room. If the host is a dress person, Across the table is the same idea built on a fluid top.
-
Alice + Olivia Dylan wide-leg trouser, black $395 -
Gerard Darel Liviah cashmere crewneck, sage $252 -
Rothy's ReVelvet penny loafer $185 -
Lagos Caviar sterling teardrops $225
The outfit: $1,057
Same look for $831
Swap the Alice + Olivia Dylan wide-leg trouser for the M&S Autograph satin wide-leg trouser, dark grape at $169. Same high waist and full leg, in a damask satin. Grape against sage is the better colour story anyway.
His, for any of the three.
One jacket, every invitation
One velvet jacket and three ways to wear it. The chocolate shawl lapel over a black roll neck skips the shirt-and-tie question entirely and looks more deliberate than either. Slim black wool trousers keep it formal enough for a cocktail invitation; swap in dark jeans and it goes to the dinner. Velvet slippers finish it. They're the one shoe men only own because of December, which is the argument for buying them.
-
M&S Autograph velvet shawl-lapel evening blazer, chocolate $295
-
M&S Autograph extra-fine merino roll neck, black $88.99
-
M&S Sartorial slim pure wool trouser, black $179
-
Bloomingdale's velvet slip-on formal loafer $205
The outfit: $768
Same look for $652
Swap the Bloomingdale's velvet slip-on formal loafer for the M&S patent and velvet tassel loafer at $88.99. Velvet vamp, patent toe, a tassel for the people who look down. Under half the price.
The three-hour rule
Every holiday party outfit fails the same way: it looked right at the door and stopped working by the second hour. Before you commit, stand in the shoes for ten minutes, sit down in the skirt, and lift your arms in the jacket as if you're reaching for a glass someone is handing over a crowd. Whatever you adjusted during that test, you'll adjust two hundred times at the party.
The office version of the rule is shorter. If you wouldn't want the photo on the company Slack on Monday, it stays home.

Questions, answered
What should I wear to a holiday party?
Match the invitation first, then add one festive texture: velvet, satin, sequin or metallic, on one piece, not four. A velvet blazer over a satin skirt covers most office and casual parties; a metallic slip dress covers anything that says cocktail. The four outfits on this page run $547 to $1,057 at today's prices.
What do you wear to an office holiday party?
What you'd wear to your best meeting of the year, plus one thing that shines. Keep the hem at the knee or below and the shoulders covered at a daytime or in-office party, and pick a heel you can stand in for three hours. Our office outfit is a velvet blazer, cashmere top, satin midi skirt and a low slingback: $818, or $547 with the cheaper shoe.
What does festive attire mean on an invitation?
It means cocktail attire with permission to have fun: the same lengths and tailoring, in a colour or fabric you'd skip in March. Velvet, satin, sequins, metallics and deep jewel tones all count. It does not mean a novelty sweater unless the invitation says so in as many words.
Can you wear black to a holiday party?
Yes, and it's the safest base there is. Black only goes flat when every piece is matte, so let one thing catch the light: a velvet jacket, a satin skirt, a crystal earring. Three of our four outfits are built on black for exactly that reason.
Are jeans OK for a holiday party?
At a casual house party, dark jeans with a silk or cashmere top and a real shoe are fine. At an office or cocktail party, no: the room will be dressed up and you'll read as the person who came straight from somewhere else. A wide-leg satin trouser gives the same ease without the denim.
What should men wear to a holiday party?
Dark trousers, a fine-knit roll neck instead of a shirt and tie, and one jacket with some texture. A velvet blazer is the most useful thing a man can own in December: it's dressy enough for a cocktail invitation and relaxed enough for dinner. Our full outfit is $768, or $652 with the cheaper loafer.
How much should a holiday party outfit cost?
Less than you think, if the money goes into one piece you'll wear again. Each outfit here keeps its best piece at full price and offers one swap; with the swap, the four come to $547, $703, $831, $652. The velvet blazer and the cashmere will still be working in February; the sequins will not.
Prices are from our retailer feeds as of November 1, 2026 and move with sales. Stock runs thin by mid-December; if a piece is gone, the tools below will find its closest twin.
