Guide · New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve outfits for 2026.

Start with where you'll be at midnight, because that decides the shoe and the coat before anything else. Then add one piece that shines: sequins on a dance floor, metallic at the hem outside, a sparkly top at a house party. Below are four complete outfits, every piece in stock at the price shown.

New Year's Eve is a long night with a bad schedule. You leave at nine, stand outside at midnight, and get home at three, and the outfit has to survive every hour of it. Plan for the hour that's hardest, not the one in the mirror.

Where will you be at midnight?

At 00:00What it decides
A dance floorA platform, not a stiletto. A bag on a chain so your hands are free.
OutsideA coat that covers the hem, boots, thermal tights. The shine goes where the coat ends.
A house partyFlat shoes. One sequinned or metallic top, the rest plain.
A dinner reservationWhatever looks best sitting down: the neckline and the earrings do the work.
A ticketed galaBlack tie. For men, a velvet tuxedo jacket is the festive version.

Midnight on a dance floor.

Bar, club, a ticketed party

A sequin midi is the dance-floor dress because it moves without riding up, and sage is the colour nobody else will be wearing in a room of black and gold. The studded platform is the clever part: the front lift takes inches off the real heel height, so you're still dancing after the countdown. A clutch on a chain goes over the shoulder when someone hands you a glass, and the crystal swirls catch every light in the room so the face gets as much sparkle as the dress.

The outfit: $690

Aqua sequin midi, chocolate, a cheaper swap

Same look for $530

Swap the Dress the Population Megan sequin midi for the Aqua sequin midi, chocolate at $128. Same column of sequins to the calf, in chocolate instead of sage. Brown sequins look richer under club lighting than they have any right to.

Midnight outside.

Fireworks, a rooftop, the street countdown

If midnight happens on a street or a rooftop, the coat is the outfit, because it's the only thing anyone will see. A black faux fur to the ankle covers almost everything, so the decisions move to the edges: a ruby cashmere roll neck at the collar, and a silver satin skirt flashing at the hem with every step. Flat knee boots, because you'll walk further than you planned and the pavement will be wet.

Under the skirt, M&S thermal sheer-look tights at $29.99: fleece inside, sheer-looking black outside. Nobody can tell, and you'll be the only one not shivering at 12:05.

The outfit: $1,184

M&S relaxed faux fur longline coat, brown, a cheaper swap

Same look for $954

Swap the M&S Autograph faux fur longline coat for the M&S relaxed faux fur longline coat, brown at $295. Same ankle length, belted instead of double-breasted, in a chocolate that warms the red up rather than framing it.

Midnight in someone's kitchen.

The house party

A house party is a New Year's Eve with the rules taken out, so the only mistake is overdressing. One champagne sequin top does all the celebrating; under it, black wide-leg jeans that look like trousers from three steps away. Gold ballet flats, because you'll be standing in a kitchen for four hours and possibly dancing on its tiles. Split hoops in gold and silver tie the top to the shoes.

The outfit: $776

M&S Autograph high-waisted wide-leg jean, black, a cheaper swap

Same look for $627

Swap the Frame Le Slim Palazzo jean for the M&S Autograph high-waisted wide-leg jean, black at $119. High waist, full leg, black denim. The Frame cut is sleeker through the hip; at a house party nobody is checking.

His, black tie or near it.

Dinner, gala, or a party that said 'dress up'

Black tie on New Year's Eve doesn't have to mean black. An evergreen velvet tuxedo jacket keeps every rule of the dress code and still looks like a celebration. White dress shirt, slim black tuxedo trousers, and polished black Chelsea boots instead of patent shoes. The boots look just as sharp under a trouser and survive a wet street and five hours on your feet. Add a black bow tie, or open the collar after midnight.

The outfit: $865

AllSaints Bloom Chelsea boot, black, a cheaper swap

Same look for $529

Swap the To Boot New York Largo leather Chelsea boot for the AllSaints Bloom Chelsea boot, black at $159.50. Black leather, elastic side, a slightly chunkier sole. Under a tuxedo trouser, only the shine shows.

The coat problem

Every New Year's Eve outfit ends up under a coat or in a cloakroom queue, and most people plan neither. If you'll be outside at midnight, choose the coat first and build the outfit to show at its edges. If you'll be inside, wear the coat you're happy to lose for an hour to a cloakroom ticket, and leave the good one at home. The one coat that works for both is long and dark, which is why the outside outfit above starts there.

The midnight photo

The one picture everyone keeps from New Year's Eve is taken at 00:01, with a phone flash, in a dark room. Flash flattens matte black into a hole and makes sequins and metallics glow, which is the real reason the night belongs to them. If you're wearing black, put the shine near your face: earrings, a metallic collar, a sequinned top. A shiny shoe in a flash photo is lost below the frame.

Questions, answered

What should I wear on New Year's Eve?

Decide where you'll be at midnight first, because that sets the shoe and the coat. A dance floor wants sequins and a platform you can stand on for hours; a street countdown wants a long coat and boots; a house party wants one shiny top and flat shoes. The four outfits on this page run $529 to $1,184 at today's prices.

What colors do you wear on New Year's Eve?

Metallics first: gold, silver, champagne and pewter all read as New Year in a way no other colour does. Black is the easy base, and a deep red or emerald is the move if you'd rather not sparkle. Some traditions add a colour on top: in Brazil people wear white to welcome the year, and in Italy and Spain red underwear is supposed to bring luck.

What do you wear to a New Year's Eve house party?

One shiny top, good black denim or tailored trousers, and flat shoes. A house party is the one New Year's Eve where heels are a liability, because you'll be standing in a kitchen for four hours. Our version is a champagne sequin cami with black wide-leg jeans and gold ballet flats: $776, or $627 with the cheaper jeans.

How do you dress for New Year's Eve outside in the cold?

Build the outfit under a coat you won't take off: a long coat that covers the skirt, knee boots, a cashmere layer, and thermal tights that still look sheer. Put the shine at the hem and the ears, the only parts that show. Our outside outfit is $1,184, or $954 with the cheaper coat.

Are sequins too much for New Year's Eve?

No. It's the one night of the year they can't be too much. The only rule is one sequinned piece per outfit, so a sequin dress takes plain shoes and a sequin top takes plain trousers.

What should men wear on New Year's Eve?

If the invitation says dress up, a velvet tuxedo jacket in a colour other than black is the most festive thing a man can wear without a costume. Pair it with a white dress shirt, black tuxedo trousers and polished black Chelsea boots, which get you through a long night better than patent shoes. Our full outfit is $865, or $529 with the cheaper boots.

What shoes are best for dancing on New Year's Eve?

A platform. The platform under the ball of the foot cuts the real heel height, so a 5-inch shoe feels like a 3-inch one at 1 a.m. Avoid a new pair: wear anything you're buying for the night around the house for an evening first.
