Find a piece · Mini dress
A mini is measured from your shoulders, not your knees.
The good version of this has been in serious wardrobes for sixty years and it is never the one on the mannequin. Worn properly a mini isn't a going-out dress at all — it is the fastest route to being dressed. One piece, one decision, finished in the time it takes to find the second shoe. It takes a jacket in October and nothing at all in July, and it is the only shape you own where the outfit is complete before you have chosen a top to go with it.
The catch is that the measurement that decides everything is never the one on the label. Dresses are graded downward from the shoulder seam, so the hem lands wherever your torso happens to end — and two women of identical height can differ by three or four inches through the body. That, and not sizing, is why one friend swears by a label and another orders the identical size and finds it indecent. Take the total length from the description, subtract your own shoulder-to-waist, and you will know where it sits before it arrives. The Theory belts at the natural waist, which makes the sum unusually easy to do: whatever is left below the belt is what you are actually buying.
Then leave the hem alone and put your attention above it. A mini takes its entire register from the top half — a wool jacket over it makes a Tuesday, a bare shoulder makes an evening, and the dress itself has not changed. The honest note on price is that this is the category where a big gap says least: a mini uses less cloth than anything else in the wardrobe and hides less construction, so most of the difference between two hundred and fifty dollars and fifty is the weight of the fabric and how it hangs after three washes. That is worth paying for in a dress you'll reach for weekly. It is not worth paying for in one bought for a single Saturday.

The softest way to change its register is a knit, not a coat. The layer that turns an evening dress into a Tuesday does that without adding a single hard line.
And the loudest version of the same shape, worn like it's nothing. Sequins, no occasion is the argument for wearing the good one on a weeknight.
When the night calls for zero ambiguity, the burnout velvet with no plausible deniability takes over from here.
