A shoe with nothing behind it has to earn the front.
There is a particular sound a mule makes on a hard floor — a half-beat behind you, then with you — and it belongs to someone who did not have to bend down this morning. That is most of the appeal. You step in, you leave, you are wearing heels: no buckle, no zip, no strap to hunt for again at the end of the night. It is the least negotiated heel there is, and on the right morning it puts an ordinary trouser somewhere it could not have got on its own.
Everything about how one behaves comes from what isn't there. A pump has a counter — the stiff cup of leather standing up behind your heel — and that cup is what actually keeps the shoe attached to you. Take it away and the whole job moves forward to the vamp, so the panel across your toes is now the only thing between you and a shoe left in the middle of the street. Which is why the good ones are cut deep over the instep, why a closed toe holds better than an open one, and why the Gianvito Rossi Rania stops at 85mm instead of 105: the height you can genuinely walk in is always lower without a counter than with one.
So buy it at the front, and buy it tight. Half a size too big is not a loose shoe here, it is an unwearable one — it will slap on the downstroke, then quietly ask your toes to grip, and by lunchtime you will resent it. Fit the larger foot, walk the length of the shop, and if the heel lifts more than a centimetre off the footbed, that is the wrong pair whatever it costs. Get that right and the spend matters less on this shape than on almost anything else in the wardrobe, because the geometry doing all the work — closed toe, no counter, mid heel — is drawn exactly the same at seventy-six dollars as at fourteen hundred.
