Shoes live four feet from anyone looking at you and a bag hangs at your hip. A scarf sits against your jaw, in frame in every photograph taken between November and March, close enough that someone can see the weave. It is the one accessory where the quality of the cloth is visible at conversational distance, and the one where a discreet logo is legible whether you meant it to be or not — the vertical PRADA on this navy runs up the panel that falls open at the front.

Woven or knitted is the choice that actually changes how it wears, and almost nobody checks. This is woven: a flat cloth with cut, fringed ends, so it keeps a crease, folds into a thin band and disappears inside a coat collar without adding bulk at the neck. A knitted scarf is warmer and rounder and looks better thrown over a jumper, but it bunches under a lapel and it stretches out of shape by February.

The blend is not a compromise either. Wool gives the panel enough backbone to hold that flat drape and to resist the pilling that happens where a coat collar rubs the same three inches all winter. Cashmere is what makes it feel like nothing against the throat. Blend the two and you get a scarf that behaves like wool and touches like cashmere, which is a better everyday scarf than a pure cashmere one, whatever the label on it says.

$225— Same construction, which is the part that matters: woven cloth, fringed ends, a panel that folds flat inside a collar. Herringbone in grey and off-white instead of a rope stripe on navy, so it reads quieter and goes with more coats. It is pure cashmere rather than a blend, and that cuts both ways — softer in the hand than the Prada from the first wear, and more inclined to pill along the collar line by the second winter, so it wants a comb and five minutes in March. The missing part is the logo running up the fold, which on a scarf worn this close to your face is precisely what the other four hundred dollars buys.
