A flat skirt hangs. A pleated one swings, and the swing is the point.

The pleat is engineering pretending to be decoration. It hides the hip, it makes an ordinary walk look deliberate, and it turns a plain sweater on top into something that reads considered rather than thrown together on the way out.

Check two things. Where the pleating starts decides the silhouette: set from the waistband it adds volume exactly where most people would rather not have it, released from the hip it falls cleaner and reads longer. Depth decides the movement. Shallow knife pleats sit flat and swing narrowly; deeper ones fan, and they need a hem that clears the widest part of the calf or the whole thing looks stuck.

Six ninety-five buys pleats released low and a satin that catches light every time you move. The version under it costs a hundred and ten and does the same trick with the light turned down.

Where it goes

When it turns cold enough that satin stops making sense, the wool midi takes over without changing the proportion.

It wants something plain on top, which is where a fine-gauge knit that tucks does more than any blouse.
