This is a spencer, not a biker. It stops at the narrowest part of the ribcage, has no collar to soften the neckline and no zip to break up the front, so there is nothing between you and the cut. Tailoring that short either sits right on the shoulder or it looks borrowed, which is why the padded shoulder line matters more here than on any coat: it holds the box square while the body underneath moves.

The crop is doing arithmetic. A jacket ending at the natural waist puts a horizontal line at your smallest point and hands everything below it the rest of the frame, which is why it reads as leg. Put it over a low rise and the maths inverts instantly — a strip of shirt shows under the hem, the line lands at the widest part of the hip, and a jacket that costs as much as a used car looks like it shrank. High waist, always.

Suede is the other decision, and the search phrase hides it. Nap is not grain. It takes light softly instead of reflecting it, so the camel reads warm and matte rather than glossy, and it takes rain, denim dye and shoulder-bag straps just as readily. A suede crop is a dry-day jacket worn over the arm through the wet bit, and it wants a rubber brush more often than a leather one wants polish.

You keep the two things that cost money — real suede (split pigskin, cupro-lined) and a genuine waist-length crop with a clean shoulder — and you lose the signature. There is a band collar and a zip where the Balmain has bare neckline and eight gold buttons, and the colour is a deep brown instead of camel. So if what you want is the material and the proportion, this is the same idea at about a quarter of the ticket. If what you want is the buttons, nothing at this price does them without tipping into fancy dress, and the honest advice is to save for the original.
